April 11, 2009
ITHACA, NY - The Brown women's lacrosse team (6-5, 2-2) battled #20 Cornell, but fell to the Big Red (7-4, 2-3), 12-9, on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kelly Robinson's (Marlton, NJ) first of two goals just 23 seconds into the second half tied the game at 6-6, but Cornell would score four straight goals over the next 15 minutes to effectively put the game out of reach.
The Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead when sophomore Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) scored an unassisted goal 3:47 into the game. However, Cornell would score three straight over a span of nine minutes to take a 3-1 lead with 17:23 remaining in the half.
The two teams traded goals for the rest of the half, as Brown would close Cornell's lead to one goal, only to see the Big Red answer to regain a two-goal cushion. During this time, senior Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) would score three goals, while senior Callie Lawrence (Denver, CO) would add a fourth, as Cornell held a 6-5 lead at the break.
Robinson opened the second half with her first of two goals just 23 seconds in to tie the game at 6-6, but Cornell scored four straight unassisted goals to take a 10-6 lead with 14:38 remaining.
Caldwell cut the deficit to 10-7 with her second of the game 1:11 later, but another Cornell goal gave the Big Red an 11-7 lead with 9:25 left to play.
Robinson and senior Jesse Nunn (Worton, MD) connected on back-to-back free position shots 1:09 apart to bring Brown to within two goals, 11-9, but Cornell scored on an 8-meter of its own with 6:06 later for the 12-9 final.
The Bears had four shots in the final minute of play, but one sailed wide of the net, and Cornell's Kristen Reese, who made nine second-half saves after making none in the first half, saved three shots in the final 36 seconds to keep Brown off the board.
Freshman Gianna Spinelli (Chatham, NJ) made five saves in the first half, while junior Madeline Wasser (Scotch Plains, NJ) recorded one save in the second half. Vitkus led Brown with three caused turnovers, while junior Kara Kelly (Garden City, NY) led the Bears with four ground balls. Freshman Katelyn Caro (Andover, MA) had two draw controls to lead Brown.
The Bears continue action on Tuesday, April 14th, when they travel to Quinnipiac to face in the Bobcats in a 4:30 p.m. game.
