Providence, RI - The Brown University women's lacrosse team (3-6, 1-1) snapped its three-game skid with a 12-11 victory over visiting Columbia (5-5, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Junior Kate Staley (Needham, MA) and sophomore Amie Biros (Bethesda, MD) combined for eight goals in the win, which was a back-and-forth battle from the opening whistle.

Staley gave Brown a 2-0 lead, opening the game with back-to-back goals at :31 seconds and 3:05, respectively. However, the Lions netted two goals of their own, at 10:16 and 11:28, to knot the game at 2-2. Staley scored an unassisted goal just four minutes later to regain the one-goal lead for Brown at the mid-way point of the half, but Columbia responded less than three minutes later to again tie the game, at 3-3.

Biros, senior Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD), and sophomore Jen Redd (Towson, MD) each scored for Brown over the next 4:51, giving the Bears a three-goal lead, 6-3, its largest of the game.

The Lions wouldn't quit, scoring back-to-back goals at 25:15 and 26:36, respectively, cutting the Bears' lead to one goal, 6-5. However, Passano and Columbia's Carrie Anderer traded goals to close the half, as Brown headed into the break leading, 7-6.

Biros and Staley scored back-to-back goals just 12 seconds apart to open the second half as Brown again took a three-goal lead, 9-6. But Columbia responded with two straight goals just 10 seconds apart to come to within one, just 2:40 into the second half.

Less than five minutes later, at 7:19, Biros tallied her third of the game to give Brown a 10-8 lead, but the Lions came to within one goal at 8:33, and then tied the game for the first time since 17:59 of the first period, with 10:44 remaining.

Freshman Mimi DeTolla (Stony Brook, NY) and Columbia's Kate Warner traded goals in a span of 5:11 as Warner's third goal of the game tied the contest at 11-11 with less than five minutes remaining.

Both teams had several chances in the final minutes, but a goal by Biros with 59 seconds remaining would prove to be the game-winner.

Senior Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY) made some clutch saves down the stretch, including one with less than 20 seconds left. Southard finished with 10 saves, while Marcela Calidonio stopped 14 shots for the Lions. The Bears continue action on Friday, April 15, when they face Cornell at 4:00 p.m. in Ithaca, NY.
