Brown Women's Lacrosse Defeats Holy Cross 14-9

Providence, RI- The Brown women's lacrosse team improved to 2-5 on the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Holy Cross, 14-9, in a game played at Warner Roof. The Bears were led by senior Bekah Rottenberg (Colrain, MA), who finished the day with a game-high five goals, including the game-winner.

Holy Cross took a quick 1-0 lead at the 1:26 mark, but Rottenberg responded with her first goal at 5:21. However, the Crusaders scored back-to-back goals at 9:56 and 10:57, taking a 3-1 lead. Just 1:30 later, sophomore Kierstan Carlson (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored her first goal of the season off a feed from junior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) to close Holy Cross' lead to just one goal.

The Crusaders regained the two-goal lead with a goal less than one minute later, but the Bears answered with four straight goals to take a 6-4 lead with 4:04 remaining in the half. Holy Cross would score two more goals in a span of 55 seconds to knot the game at 6-6, but Rottenberg gave Brown a 7-6 lead, which they never relinquished, with 57 seconds left in the first half.

Brown opened the second half with back-to-back goals, at :14 and 1:41, scored by sophomore Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) to increase its lead to 9-6. Over the next 13:57, Rottenberg added three more goals for the Bears, while senior Maggie Connolly (Manhasset, NY) found the back of the net once, as Brown held onto a 13-6 advantage with 14:22 left to play.

Holy Cross fought back, scoring three unanswered goals during a 5:29 span, cutting Brown's lead to 13-9. Junior Christine Anneberg (Denver, CO), who finished with two goals and an assist, added an insurance goal for the Bears with 3:14 remaining as Brown held on for the 14-9 victory.

Freshman Kate Staley (Needham, MA), who scored two goals, and Carlson, who added two assists, also had a multiple-point game for Brown, while freshman Meg Sullivan (Garden City, NY) added one goal.

In net, sophomore Julia Southard made 12 saves, earning her second win. Brown continues action on Friday April 11, hosting Ivy foe Columbia at 4:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
