12 Different Players Score as Brown Posts 21-6 Win over Bryant
April 7, 2009
PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior Callie Lawrence (Denver, CO) scored her first goal of the season off a feed from freshman Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) just 23 seconds into the game and the Bears never looked back, as the Brown women's lacrosse team (6-4) cruised to a 21-6 win over visiting Bryant (3-8) on Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field. Senior Jesse Nunn (Worton, MD) and McGilloway led 12 different scorers for the Bears, who built a 15-3 lead at the half, with six points each, as eight different players tallied more than one point in the win.
Following Lawrence's goal, the Bears got four more goals from four different players, including Lawrence's second of the game, to take a 5-0 lead at 10:03. The Bulldogs got on the board 2:21 later to temporarily halt Brown's momentum, but the Bears reeled off five more goals, including three from Nunn, over the next 6:18 to grab a 10-1 lead with 11:08 remaining in the half.
The two teams then traded goals over the next 3:16, with Nunn scoring her fourth and freshman Jaclyn Melicharek (Longwood, FL) picking up her first career goal at 23:29, as the Bears held a 12-3 lead. Brown closed out the half with three straight goals, as senior Lauren Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) scored twice, assisted by sophomore Brittany Boulanger (Boxford, MA) and freshman Margaret Polanin (Chatham, NJ), sandwiched around freshman leading scorer Katelyn Caro's (Andover, MA) 23rd goal of the year.
Brown opened the second half the same way it ended the first, stretching its consecutive scoring run to eight straight goals with the first four of the second frame. Sophomore Macie Winship (Shrewsbury, MA) scored her first of the season just 1:58 after the break, and then followed senior Kelly Robinson's (Marlton, NJ) 12th goal of the year with her second of the game to give Brown an 18-3 lead just 8:54 into the second half. McGilloway capped the run with her second of the day at 10:44 to give Brown a 19-3 advantage.
The Bulldogs scored their first goal of the second half at the 14:40 mark and then added another 10 minutes later to bring the score to 19-5 with 5:45 left to play. Freshman Julianne Bishop (Westwood, MA) and Polanin each scored their first career goals sandwiched around another Bryant goal to account for the 21-6 final.
The 21 goals for the Bears are one shy of the school record of 22, accomplished against Holy Cross in 1986 and against UNH in 1997. Twelve different players found the back of the net, including three players who scored their first career goals, Polanin, Melicharek, and Bishop. The win also marked the first career victory for freshman Gianna Spinelli (Chatham, NJ), who made three saves in 44:40, while junior Madeline Wasser (Scotch Plains, NJ) stopped two shots in 15:20.
Vitkus and junior Kiki Manners (North Potomac, MD) led Brown with two caused turnovers each, while Polanin led the Bears with six draw controls.
Brown returns to action on Saturday, April 11th, when it travels to Cornell to face the Big Red in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
