Providence, Rhode Island - Senior Courtney Gibbons scored three goals to lead the undefeated St. Bonaventure (5-0) women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over Brown (3-4) Saturday afternoon at chilly Stevenson Field.
After senior Nicole Motondo gave the Bonnies an early 2-0 lead, Brown battled back following goals by junior Amie Biros, two by senior Kate Staley and freshman Lauren Vitkus, to tie the game, 4-4, with 11:07 left in the first half.
St. Bonaventure took the lead for good on two straight goals by sophomore Kimberly Ross. From that point on, the two teams exchanged goals until the 11:10 mark of the second half when Brown freshman Bethany Buzzell scored her second goal of the game to cut the Bonnies lead to 9-8.
But senior Courtney Gibbons and sophomore Brenna Houton scored consecutive goals to give St. Bonaventure its largest lead, 11-8, with 5:11 left to play, putting the game out of reach.
Staley and Buzzell led the Bears with two goals each. Sophomore Melissa King faced 24 shots in goal for Brown, making nine saves.
In addition to Gibbons three goals, Houghton scored two goals and handed out two assists, while, Motondo, Ross and Katelyn Faas netted two goals each for the Bonnies. In goal, Eboni Preston saw 31 Brown shots, making nine saves.
The Bears will be back in action again on Wednesday, March 29, at New Hampshire with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
