Providence, RI - Senior Sarah Passano (Baltimore, MD) scored five goals to lead the Brown women's lacrosse team (2-3) to an 11-4 victory over Monmouth (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex. Passano scored four of her five goals in the first 30:00 as the Bears built a 6-0 half-time lead en route to the win.
Passano wasted little time in opening the scoring, when she netted the first goal of the game just 36 seconds in, off a pass from junior Kate Staley (Needham, MA). Less than a minute later, Staley connected with freshman Ali Holland (Garden City, NY), who scored her first career goal at 1:07 to give Brown a 2-0 lead.
Things settled down for nearly the next 10 minutes, before Staley scored a goal of her own at 10:24 to put Brown up 3-0. Passano netted back-to-back free position goals at 17:48 and 21:50, respectively, and then added an unassisted goal at 22:48 to increase Brown's lead to 6-0, heading into the break.
Holland assisted freshman Justine Lupo's (Ridgewood, NJ) goal just 1:53 into the second half as the Bears took a 7-0 lead before Monmouth was able to get on the board, due in part to seven first-half saves from Brown senior Julia Southard (Manhasset, NY).
After two quick goals from the Hawks, who brought the score to 7-2 at 34:48, Passano added her fifth of the day off a pass from sophomore Jen Redd (Towson, MD) at 35:32. Freshman Caitlin Wolff (Oak Hill, VA) scored her first career goal at 40:22 to regain Brown's seven-goal lead, 9-2.
Monmouth added its third of the game at 41:35, before junior Lindsey Glennon (Exeter, NH) and sophomore Amie Biros (Bethesda, MD) scored to give the Bears an 11-3 advantage. The Hawks closed out the game with their final goal, at 58:51, for the 11-4 final score.
In goal, Southard recorded a season-high 17 saves, including 10 in the second half. The Bears continue action on Friday, March 25, when they host Cal Berkeley in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
