PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened its 2006 season with a 14-4 victory over visiting Sacred Heart on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Brown's field turf. Junior Amie Biros (Bethesda, MD) scored just 27 seconds into the game and the Bears never looked back as they built a 5-0 lead in the first 8:00 of play.
Sophomore Justine Lupo (Ridgewood, NJ), freshman Bethany Buzzell (Middletown, MD), junior Jen Redd (Towson, MD) each scored over a span of 1:58, giving the Bears the early 4-0 lead just 6:41 into the game. Biros added her second of the contest at 7:56, before the Pioneers were able to get on the board at 12:28 of the first half.
Buzzell scored her second to give the Bears a 6-1 lead at 13:17 and after another Sacred Heart goal, back-to-back goals by freshman Krystina DeLuca (Hillsborough, NJ) and Biros just 1:03 apart increased Brown's lead to 8-2 at 17:53.
Sacred Heart scored two straight goals to come to within 8-4 at 24:52, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get, as Lupo added her second to give Brown a 9-4 lead at the half.
The Bears closed out the win, outscoring Sacred Heart 5-0 in the second half, as Lupo, sophomore Mimi DeTolla (Stony Brook, NY), who scored twice in the second half, Biros, and Redd each netted goals in the final 30:00. Biros led the Bears with four goals and two assists, while Buzzell tallied two goals and two assists.
In net for Brown, sophomore Melissa King (Pepper Pike, OH) picked up her first career win with 10 saves.
The Bears continue action next Saturday, March 4, when they host Boston College at 1:00 p.m.
