Women’s Lacrosse Routs Monmouth, 20-10

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team scored just 27 seconds into the contest and never looked back, defeating Monmouth 20-10 at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday. The Bears carried an eight-goal lead into halftime and were in control for all of the second half while scoring a season-best 20 goals.

Junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) led the charge for the second game in a row with five goals and one assist. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) also had a strong performance with three goals and two assists and has now recorded at least a hat trick in all six of her career games on College Hill.

Freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) generated Brown's (4-2) first score at 29:33. Alexa Smith briefly tied the game with a free-position score at 28:01, then the Bears responded with seven unanswered tallies, with big help from winning the draw control battle.

Zaffino recorded the first goal in the run at 26:02 and later put in two more (20:36, 19:23). Sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) concluded the run with a score at 17:06 to give the Bears a comfortable 8-1 lead.

Allison Turturro gave the Hawks their second goal of the game at 16:39 before Mosenthal (15:51) and DeGennaro (15:10) generated a pair to increase Brown's lead to eight (10-2).

The Hawks and Bears traded goals, with Megan Hart scoring for Monmouth at 14:44 and Mosenthal adding her second of the day at 7:51. Turturro added two straight for the visitor for a hat trick and brought the game to 11-5.

Zaffino tallied her fourth of the half at 5:00 and DeGennaro snuck one by the Monmouth goalie with four seconds remaining in the half to give the Bears a 13-5 cushion going into the break.

Monmouth (1-6) was able to improve on the draw control front midway through the period, as draws were 11-8 in favor of Brown for the first. The Bears had a commanding 22-7 lead in shots for the stanza and were 2-for-3 on free position shots while the Hawks were 3-for-3.

Junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) opened the second half with her second tally of the game at 29:16. Monmouth and Brown would next trade goals four times, with freshman Katelyn Igneri (Syosset, N.Y.) scoring her first-career goal at 6:51 to give the Bears an 18-9 lead. Sophomore KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) made it two straight for Brown, giving the Bears a double digit advantage (19-9).

Claudia Lamarca got on the board for Monmouth at 2:26 and Williams scored Brown's last of the day to bring the game to its final of 20-10.

Monmouth closed the gap in shots for the second, but Brown still held a 13-11 lead and had a 35-18 advantage overall. The Bears dominated draw controls in the second, winning 10 compared to the Hawks' three, with Brown doubling up on Monmouth in the contest, 21-11.

Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) picked up her fourth win in net and made three saves while senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) also added two for Brown. Riley Brager made five stops on the other end.

Moinuddin, (2G, 1A), Fowler (2G, 1A), DeGennaro (3G) and Williams (2G) scored multiple points for the Bears. The defense was led by senior Marissa Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) who had six caused turnovers, helping Brown force four shot clock violations on Monmouth. Sophomore Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) notched a team-high eight draw controls while Zaffino also added seven.

The Bears next resume Ivy League action and head to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. Brown will also play the following day, Sunday, March 18, hosting Iona at Stevenson-Pincince Field for a 2:00 p.m. game.
