PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated UMass Lowell, 12-6, to close out non-conference play for the 2017 season on Wednesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Brown's defensive overpowered UMass Lowell and caused 21 turnovers in the game. Offensively, five Bears recorded multiple points with sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) leading the way with five (4G, 1A).
Brown (5-8 overall) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a goal from Moinuddin (27:23) and two by sophomore Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.). The Bears defense made their presence known early and forced three failed clears by the River Hawks (6-8 overall).
Jane Dudley put UMass Lowell on the board at 20:57 before Brown went on another three-goal spurt, with tallies from freshman Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (15:28), Moinuddin (13:00) and Verni (6:03), to claim a 6-1 advantage.
Dudley would add her second score at 5:01 and DeGennaro also put in her second at 3:21 to close out scoring in the first half, giving the Bears a 7-2 lead going into the break.
The Bears doubled the River Hawks shot output, 16-8, in the first frame and also had a 6-4 edge in draw controls. Brown's defense concluded the half allowing UMass Lowell just six successful clears in 13 attempts. Freshman Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.Y.) recorded two saves in goal while her counterpart Courtney Barrett added four.
UMass Lowell scored first in the second half with Dudley recording her third of the contest at 20:04. Brown would then record a man-up tally from sophomore Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) at 15:07 to again push the Bears' lead to five (8-3).
Hana Caster next added a free-position goal for UMass Lowell at 13:07. Brown would go on to score four-consecutive goals to put the game out of reach and build up a 12-4 lead, with Verni recording her career-best fourth score of the game and Moiuddin adding two.
The River Hawks would add two late goals by Caster (2:10, 0:54) to bring the game to its final of 12-6.
Brown again outshot UMass Lowell in the second (15-11) to bring its game differential to 31-19. Like the first half, the Bears also held a 6-4 advantage in draw controls. Bigelow concluded the contest with six saves, recording four in the second while Barrett added five for a total of nine for the contest.
Moinuddin paced the Bears in scoring with five points on four goals and one assist. Verni also had a strong performance with four goals. Paletta reached the four-point mark with two goals and two assists while also adding five draw controls and two caused turnovers. DeGennaro ended the game with two points and junior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) added two assists. Senior Jillian Lee (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) also contributed an assist.
The Bears will play in their final home contest of 2017 and host Columbia on Saturday, April 22 for Senior Day. The game will begin at noon with a brief senior ceremony held prior to the start of the contest.
