Women’s Lacrosse Drops 11-8 Decision at No. 8/8 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown women's lacrosse team chipped away at No. 8/8 Cornell's lead in the second half and pulled within two, but the Big Red made two key saves in the closing minutes and added a goal for a 11-8 win on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The loss drops Brown to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the Ivy League while Cornell improved to 9-1 on the year and 4-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) led the Bears in scoring with three tallies, bringing her season total to a team-high 24 goals.

Brown scored four goals with under 15 minutes remaining in the game to inch within two of Cornell (11-8) but the Big Red's Renee Poullott made two crucial stops in goal and Catherine Ellis secured a win with a free-position goal at 1:28.

The Big Red opened the first half with two goals within a 14-second span. Ida Farinhold later added a free position score at 24:58 for a 3-0 lead.

Paletta got the Bears on the board at 17:18. Cornell countered soon after with a tally by Sarah Phillips (16:22). Senior Jillian Lee (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) pulled Brown within two (4-2) with a free-position goal at 14:10.

Cornell pushed its lead to three (5-2) at 7:08 but Brown again cut the deficit, this time with a free-position goal by sophomore Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 6:01, which wound up being the last score of the frame.

The Big Red outshot the Bears 18-9 in the first period while Brown had a 5-4 edge in draw controls. Brown was a perfect 2-for-2 on free-position shots while Cornell was 1-for-2.

Freshman Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) made four saves in the opening stanza while Renee Poullott turned away three shots.

Sophomore Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) got Brown going in the second with her 22nd of the year at 27:53 to bring the Bears within one (5-4). Cornell would then score four-straight including two from Ellis (24:36, 17:38) for a 9-4 Big Red lead.

Freshman Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) stopped Cornell's run at 13:10, netting her eighth score of the year. Paletta made it a three-goal game at 12:04 with her second of the contest.

Ellis recorded a hat trick with her third strike of the day at 9:25 to give Cornell a four-goal lead (10-6). Paletta followed, registering her own hat trick at 8:34 with a free-position goal. Lee made it a two-goal game (10-8) at 7:27 with her second score.

With the Brown offense threatening, Poullott made two key saves under five minutes for Cornell and Ellis added a security goal with 1:28 remaining.

Brown closed the shot differential in the second, trailing Cornell by just one shot (15-14). Both teams ended the half 1-for-2 on free position shots and six draw controls apiece.

Both Bigelow and Poullott made four saves in the final frame. Bigelow concluded the contest with eight saves while Poullott had seven.

In addition to Paletta's three goals, Moinuddin (1G, 1A) and Lee (2G) recorded multi-point efforts.

The Bears will return to Stevenson-Pincince Field and next host Harvard on Saturday, April 15 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
