PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After claiming its fifth consecutive Ocean State Cup, the Brown women's lacrosse team travels to Harvard on Saturday for a pivotal Ivy League matchup against the Crimson. The game can be seen live on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network beginning at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.) tallied a career high five goals and six points to pace the Brown women's lacrosse team (8-2) to a 15-7 win over Bryant (6-3) to retain the 5th Annual Ocean State Cup.
Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) added a hat trick and two assists while Danielle Mastro (Endicott, N.Y.) added a career high five assists and six points. Brown also got a pair of goals each from Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.) and Grace Healy (Bellport, N.Y.) while Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) played strong in goal to improve to 8-2 this season.
THE SERIES HISTORY – HARVARD
Harvard owns a 28-11 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools, but the Bears got the best of the Crimson last season in a 15-9 victory at Stevenson Field on April 6, 2013. Four goals from Lindsay Minges and a hat trick from Bre Hudgins propelled the Bears to their largest goal output in league play last season.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
After winning two of its first three contests in 2014, Harvard has alternated wins and losses in its last six games, including a 12-8 win versus Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Head Coach Lisa Miller's squad is 3-1 at home this season, with its only loss coming at the hands of No. 5 Boston College on March 26. Ivy League leading goal scorer, Marisa Romeo, leads a Crimson attack that averages 10.33 goals per game. Romeo also holds a sizable league lead in free position goals, tallying 16 of her 32 goals on free position attempts this year. In goal, sophomore Kelly Weis has logged all 539:38 minutes of play this year, recording a 9.90 goals-against average and .483 save percentage.
BROWN NABS FIFTH STRAIGHT OCEAN STATE CUP
The Bears improved to 6-0 all-time and 5-0 in Ocean State Cup games against Bryant with a 15-7 victory on Tuesday.
POINT STREAK CONTINUES
Bre Hudgins extended her point streak to 38-games after recording a hat trick and two assists against Bryant on Tuesday. Hudgins is two games shy of tying the Brown record for points in consecutive games held by Lauren Becker '87 (40).
DRAW CONTROLLING THE GAME
As a team, Brown tops the Ivy League with 143 draw controls (14.44 per game), including 13 draw controls against Bryant.
Junior netminder Kellie Roddy has backstopped the Bears defense in goal this season, ranking first in the Ivy League in both save percentage (.500) and goals-against average (7.13).
GION SHATTERS CAREER HIGHS
Janie Gion shattered single-game personal milestones on Tuesday, tallying five goals and six points, besting her previous career highs of three goals and four points.
Danielle Mastro recorded career highs in assists in back-to-back games, recording four against Dartmouth before notching five helpers against Bryant on Tuesday. The senior tops the Ivy League in scoring with 41 points.
