Denver Hands Women's Lax Its First Defeat, 9-8

DENVER – A valiant second half rally fell short as the Brown women's lacrosse team (7-1) suffered its first defeat of the season in a 9-8 loss at Denver (7-1) on Monday at Peter Barton Stadium.

Danielle Mastro (Endicott, N.Y.) paced the Bears with a hat trick and a team-high six shots while Grace Healy (Bellport, N.Y.) added a goal and five draw controls.  Despite a strong performance in goal, Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) suffered her first setback of the season as she surrendered nine goals while making eight saves to drop to 7-1.  Denver netminder Hannah Hook turned away 10 Brown shots en route to her seventh victory of the season.

The Brown offense was stymied in the opening 30 minutes of play as the Pioneers held the Bears to two goals on seven shots total.  After Jenn Etzel and Rachael McKinnon gave Denver an early 2-0 lead, the Bears evened the score with back-to-back tallies from Richael Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) and Mastro with under 15 minutes to play in the half.

The Pioneers countered with three consecutive goals to close out the half, led by McKinnon's second strike of the contest to give Denver a 5-2 lead at the break.

The Brown attack found its groove early in the second half as Mastro and Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.) drew the Bears within one at 5-4.  Trailing by a 7-6 margin with under 10 minutes to play, Brown nabbed its only lead of the afternoon as Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) knotted the game with the Bears a man down right before Janie Gion (Northfield, Ill.) put them up 8-7 with 7:48 to play.

McKinnon's fourth goal of the game tied it up at eight before Meredith Harris' late tally put the home team up for good at 9-8 with 1:29 to play.  A late Brown flurry was turned away as Mastro was denied by Hook with 45 seconds to play to secure the victory for the Pioneers.

Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, N.Y.) saw her 22-game goal scoring streak snapped, however, the senior co-captain extended her point streak to 36 games with an assist on Gion's goal with 7:48 to play.

The Bears will return to Ivy action on Saturday they play host to Dartmouth on Stevenson Field beginning at noon.
