Bre Hudgins’ Overtime Goal Lifts Brown Laxers Over USC, 9-8
Providence, R.I. – Junior Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) scored her third goal of the game with 15.8 seconds remaining in the third overtime period to lift Brown to a 9-8 overtime win over Southern Cal in a thrilling non-league game at Stevenson Field. Brown extends its record to 6-1 overall with the victory, while USC falls to 5-7 overall.
Brown sophomore Janie Gion (Northfield, IL) gave Brown a late 8-7 lead with 2:38 left in the second half, scoring her first goal of the game. Amanda Johansen sent the game into overtime for the Trojans with her third goal, scoring on a free position with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
Southern Cal had the better of play in the opening 30 minutes, building an early 3-0 advantage midway through the first half. Senior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) scored for the Bears at the 14:18 mark to cut the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
The two teams exchanged goals, Caroline de Lyra scoring for USC, and freshman Richael Walsh (Westwood, MA) for the Bears. Goals by Paige Bonomi and de Lyra extended the Trojans' lead to 6-2 with 2:29 left in the half.
Brown won the ensuing draw control and scored just 16 seconds later to cut the USC lead to 6-3 at intermission on a goal by Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY).
The Bears seemed to awake from their first half slumber, coming out in the second half with a vengeance. Two goals by Hudgins, and one by sophomore Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA) tied the score, 6-6, with 18 minutes remaining.
Johansen gave USC a 7-6 lead with 9:27 left in regulation, but the Bears quickly countered on goals by junior Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) and Gion at the 2:28 mark to lift the Bears to an 8-7 advantage.
Both goalkeepers were spectacular, with Brown sophomore goalkeeper Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) making seven saves, including one on a free position in the second overtime period. USC goalie Liz Shaeffer registered 12 saves for USC as the Bears out-shot the Trojans by a 27-16 margin.
Coach Keely McDonald's Brown team is back in action again on Tuesday, March 26, hosting St. Mary's (CA) at Stevenson Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
