Five Bears Score Multiple Goals in 13-4 Win over Holy Cross
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's lacrosse team (4-1) utilized a balanced attack and solid team defense to post a 13-4 win over visiting Holy Cross (4-4) at a rain-soaked Stevenson Field on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Kasey Wagner (Southborough, MA) led five different Bears who all had at least two goals with her first career hat-trick. Senior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA), junior Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and sophomore Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) all had two goals and an assist, and sophomore Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA) scored twice.
The Bears stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 14 minutes, as DiBona and Hudgins traded goals during the first 10:33 of play, before Wagner and Rooke each scored their first goals at 16:48 and 15:50.
Holy Cross got on the board when Laura Ryan connected on a free position shot with 14:55 left in the half, but Wagner finished a beautiful feed from Rooke in transition just 14 seconds later to give the Bears a 7-1 lead. Another Holy Cross goal with 11:45 left cut Brown's advantage to 7-2, but Rooke closed out the scoring in the first half with her second of the day to give the Bears an 8-2 lead at the break.
Brown slowed things down at the start of the second half, utilizing long possessions on attack and stingy team defense to limit the Crusaders' time with the ball.
Bunting finally snapped a stretch of over 21 minutes without a goal by either team with 16:08 left in the game, sparking a four-goal Brown run with her 11th goal of the season. Senior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) gave the Bears a 10-2 lead when she connected on a feed from Hudgins with 11:23 left. Goals by Wagner and Bunting over the next 1:41 pushed Brown's lead to 12-2 with 9:42 remaining.
Maddie Carrellas brought Holy Cross back to within nine with her second of the afternoon at 1:37 and Sara Hennessey made it 12-4 1:04 later. Brown freshman Arianna Lanpher (Winter Park, FL) scored on a feed from classmate Dianne Vitkus (Skaneateles, NY) with 11 seconds later to account for the 13-4 final. For both Lanpher and Vitkus, the points were the first of their young careers.
Brown, which ranked third nationally with 15.75 draw controls per game entering the week, once again dominated the draw, winning 14 to Holy Cross' five. Brown also won the ground ball battle, 13-8, while outshooting Holy Cross, 24-18. Hudgins led the Bears with six draw controls, while DiBona had three. Senior Sidney Jacobs (Blue Bell, PA) and junior Marissa Dale (North Salem, NY) both led Brown with two caused turnovers.
Sophomore Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) earned the win with six saves (two goals against) in 52:10, before giving way to freshman Victoria Holland (Huntington, NY), who made two saves, allowing two goals, in 7:50.
In the midst of a four-game homestand, the Bears return to action Friday, March 15th, when they host Quinnipiac in a 4:00 p.m. contest. The game was originally scheduled for 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 16th, in Hamden, CT, but has been moved to Friday in Providence.
