Women's Lacrosse Returns Home to Host Sacred Heart
THE GAME: The Bears will close out the non-league portion of their 2012 schedule this evening against Sacred Heart. It is also one of two remaining home games for the 2012 season, as Brown's final home contest is Saturday, April 28th, against Cornell.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bears fell to Ivy foe Harvard last Saturday, 16-8. The Crimson jumped out to a 4-0 lead, before Brown scored two straight to come to within 4-2. However, Harvard answered with another four-goal run to go up, 8-2, while Brown closed the first half with its third goal to trail, 8-3, at the break. Another Bears' goal early in the second half made it 8-4, but Harvard went on another run, scoring five straight, to take a 13-4 lead with 19 minutes left in the game. The Bears cut into the lead, but the Crimson continued to attack, answering with another three-goal run. Brown closed the game with three scores of its own to account for the 16-8 final. The Bears were led by freshman Alexandra Crerend, who scored three goals, while sophomore Bre Hudgins (2g, 1a) and senior Julia Keller (1g, 2a) both had three points. Freshmen Abby Bunting and Alyssa DiBona also scored in the loss. Defensively, Brown was led by sophomore Erin Roos, who had three caused turnovers, four ground balls, and one draw control. Crerend added three draw controls to her three goals to lead the Bears on the draw. Freshman Kellie Roddy played just over 30 minutes in net and finished with three saves, while senior Isabel Harvey recorded one save in 29:28.
ALL-TIME VS. SACRED HEART: All-time, Brown is 6-0 against Sacred Heart, dating back to the first meeting between the two schools in 2006.
LAST MEETING VS. SACRED HEART: In the 2011 meeting against the Pioneers, the Bears cruised to a 21-8 victory in their season opener. Kaela McGilloway '12 and Bre Hudgins '14 led Brown with five goals each, while Paris Waterman '11 had three goals and an assist and Lindsay Minges '13 scored twice and assisted a third. Brown got four goals from four different players in the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back. The Pioneers were able to come to within four goals, 6-2, but Brown went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-2 lead with six minutes left in the first half. Sacred Heart scored twice, sandwiched around a goal by McGilloway, as Brown led, 14-4, at the break. The two teams each scored three times in the opening 13 minutes of the second half, as Brown led, 17-7. The Bears outscored Sacred Heart, 21-8, during the last 12 minutes to account for the 21-8 final score. Nancy Baker '12, Julia Keller '12, and Abbey Van Horne led the Bears with two caused turnovers each, while Grace Healy '14 had a team-high two draw controls. Danielle Mastro '14 led Brown with four ground balls. Isabel Harvey '12 earned the win with four saves in 42:57, while Maggie Suprey '11 and Brienne Donovan '13 combined for three saves in the final 17:03.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: The Pioneers enter Saturday's game following a 10-9 win over Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon, Sacred Heart's third straight wiin after defeating Robert Morris and St. Francis. The Pioneers are led by Emily Pepe, who has 55 points (23g, 32a), while Aurelle Pluijmakers is second on the team with 35 points (32g, 3a). Kate Kmiotek and Kaitlin Rochler are tied for third on the team in scoring with 32 points, while three other players have scored at least 10 points on the season. An additional three have earned at least one point. Kelly Keenan has a team-high 40 ground balls, while Kelsey Russo leads the Pioneers with 50 draw controls and with 20 caused turnovers. Keenan has seen the majority of time in net this year and has earned an 11.70 GAA to go along with a .463 save percentage.
