Women’s Lacrosse Runs Past Sacred Heart, 15-5
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's lacrosse team (6-5) utilized a 10-0 run during a 12-minute stretch in the first half to break open a 2-2 game and cruise to a 15-5 win over visiting Sacred Heart (6-8) on Saturday evening at the Berylson Family Fields. The Bears were led by freshman Alexandra Crerend's (New Canaan, CT) four goals, while senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) had three goals and two assists.
Brown opened the game with back-to-back tallies from McGilloway and Crerend, assisted by McGilloway, to take a 2-0 lead at 5:31. The Pioneers would answer with two goals of their own, as Kaitlin Rochler and Emily Pepe scored about five minutes apart to tie the score at 2-2 10:35 into the game.
Crerend's second of the afternoon at the 11:39 mark sparked a 10-0 run for the Bears, who led 12-2 with 6:19 left in the first half.
During the run, Brown received goals from eight different players, as Crerend and McGilloway both scored twice. Freshman Emily Klein (Pleasanton, CA) capped the run with her first career goal and the Pioneers would get one back with 4:34 remaining in the half to cut the Bears' lead to 12-3 at the break.
Brown dominated the first half, outshooting Sacred Heart, 22-4, and winning 10 of 16 draw controls. The Bears were relentless on the ride, holding the Pioneers to just three successful clears out of nine attempts.
The final 30 minutes were played at a much slower pace with Brown taking a 13-3 lead on Crerend's fourth of the afternoon 7:27 after halftime. The Bears would hold the 10-goal lead for nearly 16 minutes, before Sacred Heart scored back-to-back goals in a span of 38 seconds to come to within 13-5 with 6:13 left to play.
Sophomore Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) connected on a free position attempt with 4:26 left and Klein scored her second of the afternoon just 1:04 later to account for the 15-5 final.
Senior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) also finished with a multi-point game, scoring a goal and assisting two others.
Junior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) led Brown with four draw controls, while Hudgins had a team-high three caused turnovers. Crerend, freshman Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA), and freshman Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA) each had three ground balls to lead the Bears.
For the game, Brown held a 35-12 advantage in shots and a 14-8 advantage in draw controls. Brown also earned 22 ground balls to Sacred Heart's 12 and caused 13 turnovers to Sacred Heart's three.
Brown continues action on Wednesday, April 18, when it travels to New Haven, CT to face Yale in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
