CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Harvard women's lacrosse team (5-6, 2-2) scored the game's first four goals in the opening 10 minutes and went on to build an 8-3 lead at the half en route to a 16-8 victory over the Brown women's lacrosse team (5-5, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT) led Brown with three goals, while sophomore Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and senior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) each had three points.
Though it took over eight minutes for either team to get on the board, Harvard's Jenn VanderMeulen scored three times in a span of 1:14 to give the Crimson a 3-0 lead. A goal by Danielle Tetreault at the 10:18 mark increased Harvard's lead to 4-0 and forced the Bears to call a timeout.
Hudgins scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 11:25 and 17:43 to bring Brown to within 4-2, but Harvard went on another four-goal run from 21:39 to 28:36 to take an 8-2 lead. Keller assisted Crerend's first of the afternoon with 36 seconds left, as Brown trailed, 8-3, at the break.
Senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) assisted a goal by freshman Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) just 44 seconds after halftime to close the deficit to 8-4. However, Harvard reeled off five unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to increase its lead to 13-4 with 19:34 remaining.
Freshman Alyssa DiBona's (Media, PA) second goal of the season at 42:49 temporarily halted Harvard's momentum, but VanderMeulen's sixth goal of the day sparked a three-goal Crimson run, as the hosts held a 16-5 lead with 5:52 left to play.
Brown closed the game with the final three goals of the afternoon, including two by Crerend in the final 30 seconds, to account for the 16-8 final.
