Bears Come Back Falls Short in 14-8 Loss to #11 Dartmouth

PROVIDENCE, RI – Trailing, 8-4, at the start of the second half and then 10-5 six minutes after the break, the Brown women's lacrosse team (5-4, 1-2) utilized a three-goal run during a stretch of four minutes to come to within a pair of goals, 10-8, against the 11th-ranked Big Green. However, Dartmouth (7-1, 3-0) would score four straight goals during the final eight minutes of play to come away with a 14-8 victory over the Bears at the Berylson Family Fields. Freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT) led Brown with three goals, while seniors Julia Keller (Concord, MA) and Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) both had a goal and an assist.

The Big Green opened the game with the first four scores of the afternoon to jump out to a 4-0 lead just 6:49 into the game. A goal by Brown junior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) at 13:04 got the Bears on the board, but Dartmouth answered with two goals in a span of less than two minutes to take a 6-1 lead with 13:56 left in the first half.

Crerend got Brown back into the game, scoring back-to-back goals at 17:12 and 22:52, but Dartmouth outscored Brown, 2-1, over the final 4:42 of the half, including one with 20 seconds left before the break, to take an 8-4 lead after 30 minutes.

Hana Bowers opened the second half with her third goal just 44 seconds after the draw, but senior McGilloway found Keller in the center of the eight less than four minutes later for Keller's 14th goal of the year, as Brown kept the deficit at four goals.

Sarah Plumb connected on a free position attempt at the 36:21 mark to give Dartmouth a 10-5 lead, but sophomore Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) answered for Brown three minutes later, sparking a three-goal run over the next four minutes. Crerend's third of the afternoon 1:41 after Healy's goal made it 10-7, while sophomore Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) scored her 15th of the season at 43:12 to bring Brown to within 10-8.

With Dartmouth on its heals, the Bears looked to continue the scoring run, as junior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) and freshman goalie Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) caused two turnovers in Brown's defensive end on the next two Dartmouth offensive possessions. However, back-to-back yellow cards against Brown with 13:36 left and then with 10:24 left gave the Big Green the edge it needed, as Kirsten Goldberg scored a goal a player advantage with 8:42 on the clock to regain a three-goal lead, 11-8, for the visitors.

After Hilary Smith gave Dartmouth a 12-8 lead with 6:10 left to play, Hudgins nearly closed the lead to three goals, but her free position shot 41 seconds later hit the crossbar. After a series of possession changes in both directions, freshman Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) looked to get one back for Brown. With Dartmouth goalie Kristen Giovanniello clearly, Bunting leapt up into the air and intercepted her pass, before racing towards the cage uncontested. However, Giovanniello made the save, one of four in the second half, and Dartmouth used a fast-break counter attack to take a 13-8 lead with 3:37 left to play.

Lindsey Allard scored the final goal of the afternoon just 23 seconds later and the Bears were unable to get any closer in the final minutes. Free position shots from Hudgins and sophomore Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) were blocked and wide, respectively, while Giovanniello made a save on an attempt by Keller with 1:50 left to play to prevent Brown from getting any closer.

For the game Dartmouth held a 22-21 advantage in shots, as Roddy made six saves and Giovanniello stopped five. Brown earned 17 ground balls to Dartmouth's 14, while the Big Green won 14 draw controls to Brown's 10. Roddy led Brown with four ground balls, while sophomore Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL), freshman Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA) and Rooke each had two draw controls.

Brown returns to action on Saturday, April 7, when it travels up I-95 to face Harvard in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
