SMITHFIELD, RI – Senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) led 11 different goal scorers with four goals and three assists to help the Brown women's lacrosse team (4-3) defeat in state rival Bryant (1-6), 17-7, in the third annual battle for the Ocean State Cup. In addition to McGilloway's seven points, her second consecutive seven-point game, the Bears also received multiple-point outings from freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT), and sophomores Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY), who all had two goals and an assist.
The Bears came out flying, scoring three goals in the game's opening 2:02. McGilloway got things started just 19 seconds into the game, while junior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) and sophomore Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) scored goals 35 seconds apart to give Brown the early lead. The Bulldogs would answer with two straight goals, but McGilloway connected on a free position attempt 8:22 into the game to give Brown a 4-2 lead and spark a 5-0 run over the next 10 minutes. Crerend capped the run with her first of the day with 12:41 left in the half, before Bryant's third goal of the frame 24 seconds later made it 8-3 in favor of the Bears.
Again, Brown answered the Bryant score with a scoring run building an 11-3 lead on goals by Mastro, assisted by Crerend, Crerend, and senior Julia Keller (Concord, MA), assisted by McGilloway. The Bulldogs scored with 47 seconds left before halftime to close to within 11-4 at the break.
Brown opened the second half just as it opened the game, scoring three straight goals. McGilloway connected on another free position shot just 1:42 into the half, before Hudgins assisted a goal by Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) at 35:08 and McGilloway assisted a goal by Mastro 21 seconds later to increase the lead to 14-4.
Bryant would close to within nine goals with 18:06 left in the game, but Hudgins scored back-to-back unassisted goals five minutes apart to give Brown a 16-5 lead with 8:53 remaining. After a pair of Bryant goals in the final four minutes, brought the score to 16-7, McGilloway scored her fourth of the evening with 43 seconds left to account for the 17-7 final.
Paced by a game-high seven draw controls for Healy and four for sophomore Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL), Brown won the draws, 18-8, while outshooting Bryant, 36-16. Freshman Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA) led Brown with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and also scored her first career goal, while classmate Janie Gion (Northfield, IL) also scored her first career goal in the win.
Brown returns home to host Stanford in a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, March 25th. The game closes out a stretch of four straight non-league games for the Bears, who resume Ivy League action the following Saturday, March 31st, at home against Dartmouth.
