Bears Fall to #14 Princeton, 18-8, in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, RI – Princeton (2-2, 1-0) opened the game with six straight goals in the first 12:28 and never looked back, stretching its lead to 9-1 late in the first half, en route to an 18-8 victory over the Brown women's lacrosse team (2-2, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Berylson Family Fields.

After falling behind, 9-3, at the break and then 10-3 early in the second half, Brown closed the deficit to 10-5 when senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) assisted back-to-back goals by sophomore Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and junior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) four minutes apart. However, that would be as close as the Bears would get, as the Tigers responded with three straight goals to take a 13-5 lead with 17:17 left to play. Brown would close the gap to six goals, at 14-8, with 6:27 remaining, but Princeton scored with a player advantage with 3:59 left to regain a seven-goal advantage. The final three goals of the game, all in the last 2:22, were scored with Brown freshman goalie Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) out of the net, as she looked to pressure the ball and help the Bears regain control.

After Princeton's opening six-goal run, McGilloway's seventh goal of the season got Brown on the board with 13:35 left in the first half. The Tigers answered her goal with three straight, but Hudgins closed the half with back-to-back goals 1:07 apart to bring Brown to within 9-3 at the break.

Jaci Gassaway, who led all scorers with six goals, increased Princeton's lead to 10-3 just 3:50 after halftime, but Brown answered with goals by Hudgins and Minges, both assisted by McGilloway, at 34:44 and 38:14 to come to within 10-5.

Cassie Pyle scored her third of four goals to halt Brown's momentum and open a three-goal Tigers' run, as Gassaway scored two more times to give Princeton a 13-5 lead with 17:17 left. Sophomore Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) tallied an unassisted goal two minutes later, before the teams went nearly seven minutes without a goal.

Sarah Lloyd's goal with 8:24 left regained an eight-goal margin for the Tigers, but freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT) brought Brown to within 14-7 1:04 later and then assisted a goal by senior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) 53 seconds after her goal to again bring the Bears to within six goals, 14-8.

Keller's goal would be the final one for Brown, though, as the Tigers scored the final four goals of the day, the final three of which were without a goalie in the Bears' net, accounting for the 18-8 final.

In all, McGilloway (1g, 2a) and Hudgins (3g) both had three points, while Mastro and Crerend each had a goal and an assist to lead Brown. Sophomore Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL) led the Bears with four ground balls, while freshman Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) had a game-high five draw controls. Roos led the Bears with three caused turnovers.

Senior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) stopped three shots, allowing nine goals, in the first 20:50, before giving way to Roddy, who played an inspired 39:10. Roddy also made three saves, allowing nine goals, though three of the nine were scored with her out of the net. She also had two caused turnovers and one ground ball.

Brown returns to action on Tuesday, March 13, when it travels to Worcester, MA, to face Holy Cross in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
