Women’s Lacrosse Claims Second Straight Ocean State Cup, Defeats Bryant, 14-4

PROVIDENCE, RI – Led by senior Alexa Caldwell's (Middletown, DE) five points (4g, 1a), the Brown women's lacrosse team (5-2) earned its second straight Ocean State Cup victory, defeating Bryant (1-5), 14-4, on Sunday afternoon at the Berylson Family Fields. Caldwell led six different Bears with multiple points, while 10 different players tallied at least one point in the win.

The Bears opened the game with a 4-0 run in the first 7:23, as Caldwell scored twice during this time and freshman Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL) and junior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) also scored during this time.

After Bryant got on the board with a free position goal at the 10:52 mark, freshman Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) responded for the Bears, finishing a feed by sophomore Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY), to give Brown a 5-1 lead just shy of the midway point of the opening half.

Freshman Grace Healy (Bellport, NY), assisted by Caldwell, and junior Julia Keller (Concord, MA), assisted by McGilloway, scored back-to-back goals in just 63 seconds to increase Brown's lead to 7-1 at 22:17.

Keller and McGilloway combined for the first goal of the second half, giving Brown an 8-1 lead at the 32:32 mark, before Caldwell capped the 5-0 Bears' run with a free position goal at 35:38 to increase the lead to 9-1.

Bryant's Antoinette Lombardi and Emily Bogan scored on free position shots about five minutes apart, but both were answered by a pair of Brown goals, as the Bears' lead stretched to 13-3 on a goal by Roos with 8:07 left to play.  Caldwell, freshman Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY), and sophomore Kasey Wagner (Southborough, MA) also scored during this time.

Goals by Madeleine Pickett for Bryant and Healy for Brown just 11 seconds apart in the 59th minute of play accounted for the 14-4 final.

Defensively, Brown was led by sophomore Sidney Jacobs (Blue Bell, PA) with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Healy continued her dominance on the draw, winning a game-high four draw controls.

Junior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) earned the win with five saves on six shots in 22:17. Senior Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA) recorded four saves on six shots in 29:30, while sophomore Brienne Donovan (Pine Township, PA) allowed one goal in 8:13. Bryant's Lauren Filippone and Brianna Watt combined for 16 saves, as Brown held a 36-16 advantage in shots during the game.

Brown doubled Bryant up on ground balls, 30-15, and won 13 of 20 draw controls.

The Bears are now off for over a week, as they head into a grueling stretch of the schedule which will see them play four games in 13 days, three of which are against teams currently ranked in the nation's top-20. The stretch begins a week from Tuesday when Brown will travel across the country to face Stanford, currently ranked 7th in the nation, on Tuesday, March 29th at 4:00 p.m. PDT.
