FAIRFIELD, CT – Junior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) and freshman Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) led nine different Brown goal scorers, four of whom scored the first goals of their careers, as the Bears (1-0) opened the 2011 lacrosse season with a convincing, 21-8, win at Sacred Heart (0-1) on Saturday morning in Connecticut. Other players with multiple goals included senior Paris Waterman (Newark, DE) with three and sophomore Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) and freshman Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) each with two. Junior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) also had a big day, dishing out three assists.
Brown wasted little time in jumping out to a quick lead, as four different goal scorers struck in the opening seven minutes to give Brown a quick 4-0 advantage. Freshmen Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) and Hudgins each scored the first goals of their careers just 55 seconds apart to open up the game for Brown.
After a save by junior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) on the Pioneers' first attempt, Brown raced the other way and added two more goals, a free position score by Waterman at 4:16, forcing Sacred Heart to call a timeout, and McGilloway's first of the game, off a pass from Mastro, at 6:58.
The Pioneers, who controlled most of the draws in the first half, 12-6, got on the board in the eighth minute of play when Kelsey Russo beat Harvey for her first of the year.
Hudgins answered for Brown with a pair of unassisted goals just 52 seconds apart, capitalizing on a free position attempt for her third of the game, which gave Brown a 6-1 lead just 9:26 into the game.
Sacred Heart would get one back midway through the period, but back-to-back goals by Waterman and one by McGilloway, assisted by Keller at 16:13 extended Brown's lead to 9-2.
The Bears then rattled off three straight goals in a span of 1:43, as Healy netted her first career goal and McGilloway found the back of the net twice off assists from Minges and Keller for an 12-2 lead with 10:49 left to play in the half.
The two teams traded opportunities over the next four-plus minutes until Mastro found Hudgins for her fourth of the day at the 23:58 mark, as Brown took a 13-2 lead.
Jessica Ingrilli would score two goals, sandwiched around another McGilloway tally, as the teams headed into the break with Brown leading, 14-4.
Brown began the second half just as it did the first with Minges scoring her first goal of the year just 1:32 in to give Brown another 10-goal lead, 15-4.
However, back-to-back Sacred Heart scores just 2:02 apart would cut the lead to 15-6 with just under 25 minutes to play.
Senior Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) and Minges responded for Brown to regain the 11-goal advantage and after another Pioneers' tally, Healy scored her second of the day for an 18-7 lead with 11:40 left in the game. Another Sacred Heart goal at the 50:31 mark made it 18-8, but three straight Brown goals, scored by junior Nancy Baker (Upper Arlington, OH), Hudgins, and freshman Lucinda Caldwell (Middletown, DE) in the final seven minutes accounted for the 21-8 final.
Defensively, Brown was led by Baker, Keller and freshman Abbey Van Horne (Ridgewood, NJ), who all had two caused turnovers, while Mastro Paced Brown with four ground balls and Healy earned two draw controls.
Harvey earned the start in net and claimed the win with four saves (six goals against) in 42:57. Senior Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA) played 12:11 and stopped two of four shots she faced, while sophomore Brienne Donovan (Pine Township, PA) stopped the only shot she faced in the final 4:52.
For the game, Brown had the advantage in shots (33-19), shots on goal (27-15) and saves (7-6). The Bears were 13-14 on clear attempts and went 4-6 on free position attempts, committing just nine turnovers to Sacred Heart's 24. The Pioneers held the advantage in draw controls, winning 21 of 30.
Brown returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Boston University in its 2011 home opener. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Berylson Family Fields.
