Providence, RI - Dawn Loomis has been named an assistant coach of the women's ice hockey team, Head Coach Digit Murphy announced. Loomis returns to Brown after a previous five-year stint as an assistant on Murphy's bench, from 1996-2001.
"We're very excited to have Dawn back with the program," Murphy said. "She's a great coach and a great mentor to our student-athletes, as I've seen first-hand in the past. She's a great role model for them to see, after taking a five-year hiatus to start a family."
Loomis' primary responsibilities on the ice will lie with the defense and goaltenders. Off the ice, she will handle varied recruiting issues and act as a liaison with the sports information and marketing departments and the Brown University Sports Foundation.
In addition to her coaching experience at Brown, Loomis has also worked with the Rhode Island Panthers women's hockey program, the Ocean State Development Camp, the Northeast Skills Development Festival and the Digit Murphy Hockey School.
A 1988 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Loomis earned a B.S. in Sports Communications. She was a four-year member of the women's varsity ice hockey team that captured two ECAC Championships and one University Cup during her collegiate career. Playing mainly at defense, she was an assistant captain for the Wildcats as a senior and played in the CCM Senior All-Star game. She received the UNH Seventh Player Award as a junior.
Loomis' history with Brown athletics extends beyond the bench. She was an assistant sports information director in the Department of Athletics for two years, serving as the primary contact for the men's ice hockey team, before joining the coaching staff of the women's team. She came to Brown from the University of Rhode Island, where she served as the coordinator of sports communications from 1992-1994. Before that, she was the assistant director of sports information and promotions at La Salle University for three years, and the information specialist for a year at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Loomis received her master's of science degree in physical education and athletic administration from the University of Rhode Island in 1996. She is a member of USA Hockey and has participated in the coaching certification program. She attended the International Coaching Symposium in Mississauga, Ontario in 2000.
Loomis (formerly Wright) grew up in Centerville, Mass. and attended Barnstable High School, playing field hockey, softball, basketball and volleyball. She was also a member of the Cape Cod Aces hockey team, winners of four national titles. Loomis played in several adult hockey leagues after graduation.
Loomis and her husband, Rocky, reside in Seekonk, Mass., with their daughter, Camryn, 2, and their son, Connor, born this past May.
