Brown Athletics to Host Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Feb. 4, 2009

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University Athletic Department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host its 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Week, February 6-14, with several events to help support the fight against breast cancer. Proceeds from these events will be donated to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

SAAC's creative and promotional efforts combine a number of local, regional, and national initiatives into a concentrated eight-day campaign. Included within Brown's awareness and fundraising drive are the ECAC Hockey League's "Pink at the Rink", the Women's Basketball Coaches Association "Pink Zone", the National Association of Basketball Coaches' "Suits & Sneakers", the NCAA's "Pack the House" and the Bears' own "Blitz the Pitz" and "Meehan Mayhem" events.

A full schedule of Breast Cancer Awareness Week events is listed below. Donations will be accepted at all of these events, and individual teams may be showing their support via pink shoelaces, wristbands, racquet and stick wraps, and more.

"Athletic participation at Brown is about so much more than games and practices," said SAAC co-President Shae Fitzpatrick `09. "All of our student-athletes and teams are excited to lead this week and hope we can make a positive impact in the fight against breast cancer."

"Our department places a great deal of importance on giving back to the community," added Michael Goldberger, Brown's Director of Athletics. "I'm thrilled that SAAC has taken up this cause and encourage the entire Brown community to support this effort."
