Brown Falls 4-1 at Clarkson
Dec. 2, 2006
Potsdam, NY - For the second half of the second period and nearly all of the third, the Brown women's ice hockey team (1-11-1, 0-9-0) controlled the game and kept the puck in the offensive zone. However, it was not enough, as the Bears eventually dropped their ninth ECACHL contest 4-1 at Clarkson (10-6-2, 5-4-1).
The Bears got on top less than two minutes into the game. Junior Heather Lane (London, ON) fed a pass up the ice to junior assistant captain Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL), who carried the puck into Clarkson's zone. Olewinski skated around the back of the net from right to left and attempted a wraparound shot that was saved by the Clarkson goaltender. However, Olewinski kept at it, putting the rebound home for the lead.
The Golden Knights did not stay down, taking a 2-1 lead into intermission thanks to two power-play goals by leading scorer Genevieve Lavoie. They tied things at 7:32 thanks to a Brown penalty for having too many skaters on the ice, as Lavoie put a shot on net from an odd angle that rolled up the arm of goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL), and in. On the next Clarkson power play, a shot was deflected by Brown's defense right to the freshman, who sent a wrist shot past Stock.
Brown's bad luck continued as Clarkson extended its lead to 3-1 at 8:18 in the second period. A shot by Clarkson senior Lauren Lubrano from the left point seemed to be headed well to the right and high of the net, but the shot ricocheted off of a Brown defenseman's shoulder and into the top right corner of the net.
The Bears played in Clarkson's zone for most of the rest of the game, but they were unable to score. With 34 seconds remaining, Lavoie added her third goal of the contest, sealing the loss for Brown and giving the freshman her second hat trick in as many games.
Stock finished the game with 25 saves. The Golden Knights held a 29-24 advantage in shots. Brown will travel to Boston University on Tuesday for its final game before exams and a one-month break from games.
