Providence, RI - For the fifth straight season, the Mayor's Cup changed hands on Saturday, as the Brown women's hockey team (1-8-1) lost to Providence College (3-6-2), 5-2, at Schneider Arena. Sophomores Nicole Brown (Swift Current, SASK) and Jenny Cedorchuk (Medfield, MA) scored for the Bears, while junior Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) made 43 saves, her third 40-save effort of the season.
The Friars opened the scoring at 6:39, already on their second power play of the game and having already put 13 shots on net. Friar defenseman Erin Normore sent a hard shot in from the right point that was saved by Stock, but the rebound popped out to Cherie Hendrickson, who slipped the puck in next to the left post. PC doubled the lead just under six minutes later on another power play, as defenseman Kathleen Smith sent a slap shot just past Stock's right shoulder and under the crossbar. Providence got one more less than two minutes into the second period, as Danielle Tangredi put a shot in from the left slot at 1:52.
The Bears were able to get on the board at 11:39, as Nicole Brown put home a rebound off of a shot by freshman Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA) for her second goal of the season. The assist was Suprey's first of her career, while sophomore Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) picked up her first assist of the year on the play as well. However, the Friars answered back less than a minute and a half later, as Katy Beach deflected a shot by Amber Yung over Stock's shoulder for a 4-1 PC lead.
Brown came out of the locker room for the third period firing on a power play carried over from the second period. Cedorchuk cashed in on that man-advantage with a blast from the point that beat Providence goaltender Danielle Ciarletta top-shelf for her first career goal. Senior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) earned an assist on the play for her 108th career point, putting her in a three-way tie for 14th all-time at Brown.
Brown fought hard to get back into it for the rest of the period, but was unable to score. Providence was able to cap one more on with under a minute to play, as Alyse Ruff broke into the Brown zone and sent a wrist shot in from the right side that beat Stock stick-side.
The Bears will return to Meehan Auditorium next weekend for tilts with #2/3 St. Lawrence and #10 Clarkson.
