Box Score

Providence, RI - While finally able to break through for two power play goals, the Brown women's ice hockey team (1-7-1) lost to Robert Morris (7-7-1) at Meehan Auditorium on Friday afternoon, 4-2. The Bears held a 1-0 lead heading into the second period, but three Robert Morris goals in a span of under five minutes, all of which came on deflected shots from the point, to take the lead and notch the eventual game-winner.

In the first period, Brown outplayed its guests on all fronts, out-shooting the Colonials 14-4, taking two penalties to RMU's five, and scoring the game's first goal. On a five-on-three, during which there were actually three Robert Morris players in the penalty box, freshman defenseman Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC) skated in from the right point and sent a waist-high shot through traffic and past goaltender Brianne McLaughlin. The goal was the first of Kromm's career, and sophomore Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ONT) and senior Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL) picked up helpers on the play.

The Bears remained in control until 6:17 in the second period, when a holding call gave Robert Morris a power play. Thirty-four seconds later, junior Kristen Miles deflected a shot by sophomore Jacki Gibson, who assisted on all four RMU goals, past Brown goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL), knotting the game at one. Freshman Maria Stoa did the same on another Gibson shot at 8:42, giving the Colonials the lead for good. Near the very end of another power play, RMU freshman Kylie Rossler deflected a shot by sophomore Mallory Giambra past Stock at 11:34, netting the eventual game-winning goal.

The Bears made it a one-goal game on another five-on-three at 16:17 in the second, as senior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) slipped a pass to Olewinski in the slot for the senior's first goal of the season. Freshman defenseman Samantha Stortini (Sudbury, ONT) also earned an assist on the goal. However, RMU sealed things with a goal at 14:54 in the final period, as junior Megan Picinic scored during a scrum in front of the net just six seconds after Brown had killed off a penalty for the final 4-2 score.

The two teams were even with 26 shots apiece, as McLaughlin made 24 saves to Stock's 22.

On Saturday, the Bears will travel across the city for the 13th-Annual Mayor's Cup Game with Providence College. The puck drops at 2:00 p.m.
