Hamilton, NY - After having its second game-tying goal disallowed in two days, the Brown women's ice hockey team (0-3-0, 0-2-0) fell to Colgate 4-1 Saturday. Freshman Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) scored Brown's lone goal, picking up her first collegiate score.
The Bears got on top at 6:27 in the first period on a beautifully executed power play. With the Bears controlling the puck in Colgate's zone rather comfortably, junior co-captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) passed across the crease from the left side to Connors, who was posted right next to the Colgate net for an easy one-timer. The Raiders got that goal right back just 23 seconds later, as a shot by the Raiders' Sam Hunt bounced off a Brown skate and into the net.
The Raiders took the lead early in the second period, when a shot from the left side was deflected into the very top right corner of the goal. Midway through the period, Colgate was on a power play when freshman Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ON) got the puck in the Bears' zone with nothing but open ice in front of her. She skated up the ice and put a shot on net from five feet in front that appeared to trickle in after an initial save by Colgate goaltender Brook Wheeler. However, the referees conferred, and ruled that the puck had not crossed the line before the whistle.
Colgate scored again soon after the Brown goal was disallowed, when Carly McNaughton scored her second goal on a rebound right in the slot. The lead increased to three when Colgate scored just 1:40 into the final period.
Goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) made 28 saves in the loss.
