Ithaca, NY - Despite a late rally, the Brown women's ice hockey team (0-2-0, 0-1-0) was unable to dig itself out of a 3-0 hole, falling to Cornell by a 3-2 count Friday night. With 25.9 seconds remaining in the game, the Bears thought they had scored to send the game into overtime. However, the referees had blown the play dead less than a second before the puck crossed the line, and the goal was not counted. Junior captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) and freshman Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ON) each scored in the loss.
The Big Red struck first when Rebecca Flewelling picked up a loose puck behind the net and wrapped it around the left post at 4:27 of the first period. They doubled the lead on the power play just under three and a half minutes later, when Brittany Forgues scored on a shot from the back of the right faceoff circle.
The Bears peppered the net on a pair of power plays later in the first, but could not break through for a goal. Moore nearly cut the deficit to one with just under two minutes to play in the frame. She took a wrist shot from just inside the left faceoff circle that went over Baronick's shoulder as she went to her knees, but the puck hit the crossbar and bounced away.
Goaltender O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage, AK), who made 23 saves, came up big for Bruno at 3:40 of the second. Cornell caught the Bears during a line change, as a pass up the ice found Brianne Schmidt all alone with the Brown goaltender. However, Shipe alertly poked the puck away before Schmidt had a chance to catch up with the pass. She withstood a strong Big Red attack for the first seven minutes of the period, stopping seven shots.
It seemed that the Bears were finally gaining some momentum when Flewelling got her second goal of the night, again wrapping the puck in from the back of the net on Shipe's right.
Moore scored Brown's first goal of the season with just 1:28 remaining in the second. Freshman Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) skated straight in on net and took a shot that Baronick stopped. Moore followed the play perfectly, depositing the rebound in the bottom left corner of the net.
Van Muyen cut the Cornell lead to one at 9:37 in the third period. With players fighting for the puck on the boards to the right of the net, the puck trickled loose, where the rookie picked it up, skated in and put a shot through Baronick's five-hole for her first collegiate score. Despite some heavy pressure, the Bears were unable to get the puck through for the equalizer.
