Bears' Two First-Period Goals Hold Up in 2-1 Win Over RPI
Feb. 22, 2008
Providence, RI - First-period goals by freshman Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC) and sophomore Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) on the Bears' first two shots of the game were the difference on Friday night, as the Brown women's ice hockey team (4-19-5, 3-14-4 ECAC Hockey) picked up a 2-1 win over Rensselaer (13-14-5, 6-11-4 ECAC Hockey) at Meehan Auditorium. All three goals came in the first period, but the contest was not without action the rest of the way, as the teams each had two five-on-three chances. Junior Nicole Stock made 35 saves to make the lead hold up for the Bears, who picked up their first home win of the season.
Just 3:08 into the game, Kromm got the Bears on the board with a fluky goal, putting a shot on RPI's Ashley Mayr from the goal-line extended that hit the goalie in the torso and somehow fell between her legs, trickling into the net. Connors doubled the Brown lead at 15:12, one-timing a pass from classmate Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ONT) from behind the net seconds after RPI had killed off a pair of overlapping penalties.
The Engineers got one back two minutes before the first intermission. Skating the puck out of the RPI zone on a power play, sophomore Laura Gersten sent a long pass up to a streaking Whitney Naslund. Skating in on Stock alone, the Rensselaer sophomore sent a low wrist shot through the goaltender's five-hole. However, Stock was solid the rest of the way.
RPI was one-for-nine on the power play, with the Bears failing to score on six chances. Mayr made 14 stops in the loss, all in the final two periods.
On Saturday, Brown will host Union in the final game of the season for both teams. The game will also be the last for seniors Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA), Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL), Heather Lane (London, ONT), and Emilie Bydwell (Montreal, QUE). The puck drops at 4 p.m.
