Box Score

Canton, NY - Despite entering the final period tied at 2-2, the Brown women's ice hockey team (3-19-5, 2-14-4 ECAC Hockey) was unable to finish off an upset of #6 St. Lawrence (23-8-1, 16-3-1 ECAC Hockey), dropping a 3-2 decision at Appleton Arena on Saturday. Sophomore Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY) and senior captain Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL) scored for Brown, while junior goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) stopped 39 shots in the losing effort.

As they did in the teams' first meeting back in November, the Bears scored the game's first goal on a power play. Brown worked the puck up to a point, where sophomore Jenny Cedorchuk (Medfield, MA) sent a slap-shot on net. St. Lawrence's Meaghan Guckian made the initial save, but the rebound came out to Hunter on the left side for an easy goal, her fifth of the year.

That goal proved to be the lone score of the opening period, but the Saints answered in the second. Lisa Batchelor tied the game at 6:02 while the teams were skating four-on-four, taking at least three cuts at a loose puck in front of the Brown goal before slipping it by a sprawled and screened Stock. Kirsten Roach then gave the Saints their first lead at 12:45, putting home a rebound off a Karell Emard shot on a power play.

However, the Bears got an equalizer of their own before the second intermission after Stock kept the Saints at bay with 22 stops in the period. On a power play, Brown attacked the net. After a shot by freshman Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC) was stopped, Olewinski grabbed the rebound and lifted it into the top right corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season.

The Saints regained the lead at 7:11 in the third period on their second power-play goal of the game, as Brittaney Maschmeyer passed the puck from the right point to Alison Domenico on the left side of the net for a one-timer before Stock could react.

Brown applied pressure to get the tying score with some intense forechecking, led by sophomore Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ONT), and the team thought it had tied the game with 1:23 remaining on a shot by senior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA), as the puck trickled past a sprawled Guckian and into the net. However, the referee had blown the play dead just before, so the goal was disallowed. After each team received one penalty for hitting after the whistle following a skirmish in front of the net, Head Coach Digit Murphy pulled Stock for an extra attacker. Brown attacked the net, especially after a St. Lawrence penalty made it five-on-three for the Bears with Stock pulled, but the equalizer was nowhere to be found.

Guckian made 18 saves to pick up the win. The Bears converted on two of eight power plays, while the Saints scored on two of 10 man-advantages.

Next weekend, the Bears wrap up their season with home games against Rensselaer and Union on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available by calling (401) 863-2773.
