Smith's Second Goal Lifts Bears Over Huskies in OT, 2-1
Feb. 7, 2007
Providence, RI - Sophomore Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, BC) scored her second goal of the game on a power play 1:51 into overtime to give the Brown women's ice hockey team (8-15-2) a 2-1 victory over the University of Connecticut (16-11-2) at Meehan Auditorium on Wednesday night. Smith scored both Brown goals, which were also both assisted by her linemates, freshman Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY) and junior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA). Sophomore Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) stopped 25 of the 26 shots she saw to even her record at 7-7-2.
After a scoreless first period that took just 23 minutes to play, the Huskies got on the board first. Just one minute into the second period, UConn was threatening in the Brown zone. After a close shot, a Brown defender dove to clear the puck out of the zone. However, it was Connecticut's Brianna Uliasz who corralled the puck, letting a blast go from the point that deflected off the back of the Brown player, who was still on the ice, and past Stock.
A little over six minutes later, the Bears answered back. Hunter let a shot go from just beyond the left faceoff circle that was stopped, but the rebound went right to Smith, who was waiting in the slot. With UConn goaltender Brittany Wilson out of position after making the initial save, Smith put the puck in an open net to tie the score. Moore extended her point streak to 12 games with an assist on the play.
The teams again failed to score in the third period, leading to overtime. Fifty-seven seconds into the extra period, Connecticut's Amy Hollstein was called for interference, giving the host Bears the opportunity they were looking for. On that power play, a shot by Moore was stopped, but Hunter controlled the rebound and dished to Smith, who sealed the victory with her sixth goal of the year. With her second point of the game, Moore moved into 20th on Brown's all-time career points list with 99 (54g, 45a).
With tonight's win, Head Coach Digit Murphy is one victory away from becoming the third coach in collegiate women's ice hockey history with 300 wins. Brown also improved to 4-2-0 on the season against Hockey East teams.
The Bears' final four games are all in the ECAC Hockey League. They'll play their final two contests at Meehan this weekend, first hosting Union (4-22-0, 0-18-0 ECACHL) at 7 p.m. on Friday.
