Box Score

Providence, RI - With two goals in the first minute of the second period, Cornell (9-9-1, 6-6-1 ECAC Hockey) got all the offense it would need, handing the Brown women's ice hockey team (3-14-3, 2-9-2 ECAC Hockey) at 5-1 loss at Meehan Auditorium Friday night. Junior Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) made 37 saves to give her 700 on the season, breaking Brown's single-season record for saves set in the 1999-2000 season by Ali Brewer '00. Sophomore Nicole Brown (Swift Current, SASK) had the Bears' lone goal on a power play in the second period.

The Big Red got on the board at 9:10 in the first, when Brittany Forgues redirected a shot by Amber Moore from the point through Stock's five-hole. The score remained that way until the start of the second period, when goals by Caeliegh Beerworth and Rebecca Johnston, at 0:29 and 0:48, respectively, gave Cornell a 3-0 cushion.

Brown eventually got one back for the Bears at 7:58. Jolted to life by the two quick goals, the Bears went on the attack, pressing to get on the board. With two Cornell players in the penalty box, freshman Samantha Stortini (Sudbury, ONT) passed the puck up the right boards to sophomore Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA). Connors saw Brown streaking up the middle of the ice, passing the puck across to where both Brown and sophomore Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ONT) were waiting on the other side of the crease. Brown got a stick on the pass, beating Cornell goaltender Katie Wilson with a quick shot.

However, that would be the last scoring for the Bears. The score remained 3-1 until the final three minutes of the game. Big Red forwards Laura Danforth and Karlee Overguard scored at 17:21 and 19:59, respectively, on wrist shots that Stock was uncharacteristically unable to stop, bringing the final score to 5-1.

Wilson, in her first full collegiate game, made 25 saves to pick up her first win. The Big Red held a 42-26 advantage on shots for the game, mostly on an 18-7 advantage in the third period.

The Bears will look to turn things around and win their first home game of the season on Saturday, as Colgate (9-11-3, 6-5-2) comes to Meehan at 4 p.m.
