Providence, RI - Sophomore goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) picked up her second shutout in as many weekends, as the Brown women's ice hockey team (6-13-2, 4-11-1 ECACHL, 1-5-0 Ivy) defeated Cornell (2-18-1, 2-12-0 ECACHL, 1-6-0 Ivy), 3-0 at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday. Freshman Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) scored her fifth goal of the season late in the first period to give the Bears the lead for good, while sophomore Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, BC) and junior co-captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) provided insurance goals in the third period.
Connors got Bruno on the board first at 18:50 in the first with help from linemates Moore and freshman Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY). Taking a pass from Hunter, Moore skated around the back of the net and passed the puck across the crease to Connors, who buried a shot from the goaltender's left side. That goal would prove to be the last in a streak of 11 goals scored by one of the three linemates that goes back five games. Moore and Hunter picked up their ninth and team-leading 12th assists, respectively.
The Bears held that 1-0 lead until midway through the third period, when Smith doubled the lead. Junior Emilie Bydwell (Montreal, QC) put a shot on net that was stopped, but Smith crashed the net and put the rebound home for her third goal of the season. Bydwell and freshman Kath Surbey (Calgary, ALB) both picked up their second assist of the season on the play. Moore added an unassisted empty-net goal, her team-leading 15th, with 1:32 remaining to provide the final 3-0 score.
The Bears outshot Cornell 36-21 on the day, and neither team was able to capitalize on seven power play opportunities. The Bears' line of Moore, Connors and Hunter all extended point streaks. Moore now has 13 points (8g, 5a) during an eight-game streak, Connors has eight points (4g, 4a) during a six-game streak, and Hunter has seven points (3g, 4a) during a four-game streak. Hunter also has points in seven of Brown's last eight games, totaling 12 points on four goals and eight assists.
Next for the Bears is an important conference contest at Yale on Tuesday. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
