Providence, RI - The Brown women's hockey team battled sixth ranked St. Lawrence to a 5-5 tie Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears came back from a two goal deficit in the final period to send the game into overtime. Freshmen Karen Thatcher and Keaton Zucker each scored two goals and one assist to lead the Bears. Zucker tied the game 5-5 with less than three minutes left in the game. Brown now moves into third place in the ECAC with the win over the Saints yesterday and tie today with a 5-3-1 record. The Bears are 8-7-4 overall.
St. Lawrence got on the board first at the 7:41 mark. Rebecca Russell chipped in a shot by Laurie Ross for her eighth goal of the season. Gina Kingsbury also earned an assist on the play. Brown tied the game at the 18:01 mark. Freshman Keaton Zucker netted her second goal of the weekend on a power play with freshman Karen Thatcher and sophomore Kerry Nugent earning assists. The Saints quickly answered 32 seconds later with a short-handed goal to take back the lead 2-1. Ricki-Lee Doyle scored her seventh goal of the season with Sara Simard and Lindsay Charlebois earning assists. Senior goalkeeper Pam Dreyer was outstanding in net, stopping 16 shots.
The Bears did not allow the Saints to keep their lead for long as they scored just 1:02 into the second period. Thatcher recorded her sixth goal of the season and second point of the game to knot the game 2-2. Senior Kim Insalaco and sophomore Katie Guay tallied assists on the play. Brown took its first lead of the game just over three minutes later at 4:38 when sophomore leading scorer Jessica Link netted her 13th of the season to give Brown a 3-2 lead. Senior Courtney Johnson and Zucker recorded assists on the play. Zucker has now scored at least two points in the last two games, upping her season total to eight points.
St. Lawrence tied the game 3-3 at the 7:41 mark. Russell tallied her second goal of the game with Trisha Powers and Doyle earning assists. The Saints went into the locker room with a 4-3 advantage by the end of the second period. Chera Marshall tallied her tenth goal of the season with Tracey Muzerall earning her first point of the weekend with the assist at the 13:26 mark. Dreyer recorded nine saves in the period, which was very physical. Brown had a total of six penalties while St. Lawrence recorded four.
The Saints took their biggest lead of the game just 1:02 into the third. Powers tallied her second point of the game to give St. Lawrence a 5-3 lead. Charlebois earned her second assist of the game on the play. The Bears cut the lead back to one four minutes later when Thatcher tallied her second goal of the game. Freshman Myria Heinhuis earned her second assist of the season while Guay earned her second assist of the game on the play.
Brown tied the game 5-5 with less than three minutes left to play in the game. Link passed up the ice to Zucker who skated in all alone for her second goal of the game sending the game into overtime. Neither team scored in overtime ending the game in a 5-5 tie. Dreyer recorded 27 saves in net.
The Bears return to action on Saturday Feb. 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Connecticut.
