The Brown University women's ice hockey team (7-4-2, 3-0-1) downed Vermont (4-15-1, 0-6-0) 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. Six different players tallied goals for the Bears in their third ECAC win of the season.
Although the game remained scoreless in the first, Brown controlled the puck for most of the period. The Bears out shot the Catamounts 20-5 and dominated the face-offs won 17-6.
Brown opened up the game in the second period scoring three goals within two minutes of play. Junior Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) got the Bears on the board with her 11th goal of the season at the 13:24 mark. Junior Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, MA) and senior Marguerite McDonald (Richboro, PA) tallied assists on the play. Just over one minute later junior Krissy McManus (Dedham, MA) sent the puck flying past the UVM goalie to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Krystal Strassman notched her seventh assist on the play. With less than five minutes left in the period freshman Christine Holdredge (Ashley Falls, MA) increased Brown's lead to three off a pass from sophomore Myria Heinhuis (Chatham, ONT).
The Bears increased their lead to 4-0 eight minutes into the third period when senior Katie Lafleur (Aylmer, Quebec) found Strassman open in front of the net. Strassman sent the puck over the head of the UVM goalie to tally her second goal of the season. Vermont put themselves on the board four minutes later, but Brown answered back with two more goals later in the period. At 16:32, sophomore Ashlee Drover (Bay Roberts, NF) sent the goal into the net from the blue line off a pass from Link and sophomore Keaton Zucker (Gilford, NH). With one minute left in the game Zucker took the puck top shelf to give the Bears a 6-1 win over the Catamounts.
In goal, senior Katie Germain (Sarnia, ONT) recorded 14 saves.
The Bears will return to action, Friday, January 16 when they travel to St. Lawrence.
