Bears Tie RPI, 2-2
Jan. 6, 2007
Troy, NY - Junior captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) and assistant captain Rylee Olewinksi (Burr Ridge, IL) each scored as the Brown women's ice hockey team (2-11-2, 0-9-1) picked up its first ECAC Hockey League point, tying Rensselaer (8-11-1, 4-4-1), 2-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Bears started slow in their first game coming out of the exam and holiday break, but broke out later in the game, putting 10 shots on net in the third period. However, RPI was able to score the game-tying goal with 3:16 remaining to force a tie.
The Engineers opened the scoring at 4:12 in the first period. RPI sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart skated around the back of the net and attempted a centering pass from the right side of sophomore goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL). Instead, the puck caromed off the net to senior Sarah Daniel, who backhanded a shot from a few feet in front over Stock's left shoulder.
Brown would tie things back up on a power play in the closing minute of the second period. With 24 seconds remaining in the frame, Moore skated to the middle of the ice from the left side and sent a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Senior Krystal Strassman (Madison, WI), playing in her first game of the season, picked up an assist on the goal, as did freshman Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY), her team-leading seventh.
Olewinski gave the Bears their first lead midway through the third. Junior Heather Lane (London, ON) had a shot from the right side saved, but Olewinski grabbed the puck from a crowd in front of the net and put the rebound past Rensselaer goaltender Ashley Mayr for her fourth goal of the season. Lane's assist was her second.
RPI got the equalizer on a power play just over seven minutes later, sending the game into overtime. RPI's Brooke Thompson collected a loose puck and sent a wrist shot through Stock's five-hole from the goaltender's left for her second point of the game. Neither team was able to score in overtime, as the game ended tied, 2-2.
Stock made 25 saves, while the Bears were outshot, 27-16. Brown will try to pick up its first ECACHL win on Sunday at Union. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
