Women's Ice Hockey Comes From Behind To Tie Connecticut, 3-3
Jan. 4, 2005
Providence, RI - The women's ice hockey team (9-4-1, 6-3-0) needed two periods to get warmed up after a month long hiatus. The Bears found themselves trailing the University of Connecticut Huskies (5-7-4, 2-2-0) by three goals, going into the final period, when sophomore Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) netted her fifth goal of the season to give the Bear offense life five minutes into the third. Brown was out shot by Connecticut 32-46 in tonight's match-up.
The Huskies capitalized on two early power plays, jumping out to a two-goal lead mid-way through the first period. Freshman Stacy Silverman (Wakefield, MA) faced a flurry of shots in the first few minutes of play. Silverman finished the first period with 20 saves. The Bear defense had trouble clearing the zone the first two periods, giving Connecticut chances to push the game out of reach. The Huskies out shot the Bears 31-11 in the first two periods. Four minutes into the second period Tiffany Owens recorded her second goal of the game, pushing the lead to three for the visiting Huskies.
Early in the third period, Brown had Connecticut back on their heels, pressuring the defense and goaltender. About five minutes into the final period sophomore Christine Holdredge (Ashley Falls, MA) took the puck deep into the Connecticut zone and left it for freshman Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) along the left sidewall. Moore found Moos open at the top of the goal crease, to finally get the Bears on the board with fourteen minutes left to play. Nine seconds later, off the in suing face-off, Brown would cut the gap to one when senior Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) netted her fifth goal of the season to swing the momentum Brown's way. Connecticut tried to push the lead back to two, but Silverman turned away everything that came her way in the third, shutting out Connecticut's offense in the third. Silverman finished the game with 43 saves for Brown. With less than nine minutes remaining in the game, Moos found Moore at center ice. Moore skated up the left side into Connecticut's zone and gave a cross pass feed to a diving Holdredge, who put the puck over the left shoulder of Shain tying the game at three. With under a minute remaining in the game, Moore blocked a Huskie shot at the point and found herself with a one on one with Shain, but couldn't pull the trigger quick enough to give the Bears the win.
Brown pressed hard in the overtime period, but could not find the back of the net to give them their fifth straight victory.
The Bears will start their five game road trip this weekend, when they will travel to Colgate to take on the Raiders, Friday, January 7 for a 7:00 start.
