Women’s Hockey Defeated by No. 6/6 Cornell, 6-1

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 6/6 Cornell, 6-1, on Sunday at Lynah Rink. After a 1-0 first period lead, the Big Red took control of the contest with five goals in the second for a 6-0 advantage. Freshman Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) netted the Bears' lone score of the day.

Cornell (17-7-3, 13-5-2 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period when Grace Graham put back a rebound at 9:51. Shots ended 16-7 in favor of the Big Red while sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) finished the frame with 15 saves.

The Big Red took control in the second, scoring five goals in the stanza. Paige Lewis recorded the first score at 4:29 and was followed by Madlynne Mills with a power-play tally (6:42). Joie Phelps (8:35), Finley Frechette (13:34) and Willow Slobodzian (18:57) closed out the period for a 6-0 Cornell lead.

Brown (2-25-0, 1-19-0 ECAC) got on the board just 17 seconds into the third period when Blumberg registered her sixth of the season. Senior Cynthia Kyin (Skokie, Ill.) and junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) provided the assists, Najjar's team leading 11th of the year.

Senior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) entered the game in net for the Bears midway through the second and concluded the game with 21 saves while Isaac ended with 25. Marlene Boissonnault tallied 11 saves in the win for Cornell while Lindsay Browning added two in the third period.

Cornell was an overall 1-for-6 on the power play while Brown was 0-for-4.

The Bears will close out the regular season at home next week, hosting Quinnipiac on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6:00 p.m. and Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium. Prior to Saturday's contest versus the Tigers, Brown will honor its five seniors, Sam Donovan, Cynthia Kyin, Julianne Landry, Katie Swanstrom and Samantha Swanstrom in a brief pregame ceremony. Both games will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
