Women’s Hockey Defeated by Union, 5-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Union, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. Freshman Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored for the Bears in the contest.

After an evenly matched start to the first period, Union (4-10-2, 3-3-0 ECAC) broke through and scored at 18:35 when Haley Shugart put the puck in following a rebound. Shots ended even at 12-12 for the stanza.

Blumberg got the Bears (1-12-0, 1-9-0 ECAC) on the board in the second at 1:33 by forcing a turnover and getting the puck to net, where junior Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) followed and was able to get the puck back to Blumberg for the game-tying score and her third of the season.

Shugart responded shortly after with her second of the game, giving Union a 2-1 lead. The Bears fought off a 5-on-3 at 9:31 but Union would score a power-play goal with the second infraction still in the box at 10:11 (Katie Laughlin) to increase its advantage 3-1.

Union added to its lead in the third with scores at 3:02 (Katelynn Russ) and at 19:12 (Brandy Streeter) to secure the 5-1 victory.

Sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) finished the contest with 32 saves, her fourth game with 30 or more saves, while Kate Spooner stopped 27 shots for Union.

With today's contest, seniors Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) played in their 100th game. Both of them having never missed a collegiate contest in their four years at Brown.

Brown will be off until the end of December when the team travels to Sacred Heart for a non-conference series on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30. Friday's game will begin at 7:30 while Saturday's contest will start at 4:00 p.m.
