Women’s Hockey Bitten by Yale’s Late Surge, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season to give the Brown women's hockey team a lead that would last into the third period, but Yale unleashed a three-goal outburst in the final stanza to defeat the Bears, 3-1, in ECAC Hockey action at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday. The Bulldogs (7-10-4, 5-5-4 ECAC) emerge from the home-and-home series with a 1-0-1 mark over the Bears (2-14-5, 1-10-3 ECAC) following last night's 2-2 tie in New Haven, Conn.

The Bears celebrated 50 Years of Brown Women's Ice Hockey today and welcomed back over 70 Brown hockey alumnae who were honored during the first and second intermissions. Legendary Head Coach Steve Shea, Brown's first coach who led the Bears from 1974 to 1989 and won three Ivy League Championships, provided the honorary opening puck drop.

Sophomore Monica Masucci (Toronto, Ontario) recorded her first point of the season by assisting on Moorehead's goal. Senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) made 29 saves for the Bears, while her counterpart, Jaimie Leonoff, stopped 23 shots for the Bulldogs. Moorehead's goal stood up for 46:18 as the Bears held their opponent scoreless through two periods for the first time since blanking UConn for 58 minutes on Nov. 19, 2013.

For Yale, Krista Yip-Chuck tallied the tying goal, Jamie Haddad scored the game-winner and Tara Tomimoto knocked in an insurance marker. Phoebe Staenz and Janelle Ferrara finished with two assists apiece.

Moorehead put Brown in front midway through the first period, rattling off two quick shots and burying the second attempt to put the Bears up 1-0. Brown's lead nearly doubled on a keen connection between senior Samantha Woodward (Lexington, Mass.) and freshman Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.), but Conway's backhanded shot skidded just wide after Woodward's diagonal feed.

Conway tested Leonoff's agility in the final seconds of the first period on a spinning shot off a rebound. Leonoff fell backwards and snagged the puck in midair just before it cleared the goal line.

Brown survived a 5-on-3 disadvantage early in the second period, nearly tallying a shorthanded goal on an exchange between freshman Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) and senior Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario). Woo commandeered a 2-on-1 breakaway but her last-second pass sailed inches too far in front of Hoyle, who crashed in with sights set on a wide-open glove side of the net.

Yale finally tied the game on Yip-Chuck's shorthanded marker as she intercepted a pass at midice, scampered on a breakaway and held on long enough to get Moore to commit to the opposite direction.

At 12:19, Haddad picked up a loose puck after a scramble in the crease and snuck in the eventual-game winner following passes by Aurora Kennedy and Staenz. Then with 1:41 remaining in the third, Tomimoto received a swing-around pass atop the left face off circle and wound up for a wrist shot that screamed into the top shelf for a 3-1 Yale lead.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, Jan. 31 at Colgate and Saturday, Feb. 1 at Cornell for an ECAC Hockey weekend slate.
