Women’s Hockey Falls Late to Union, 2-1
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Freshman Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) scored a first period goal to put the Bears up 1-0 early, but Union's Maddy Norton knocked in the go-ahead goal with 39 seconds left in regulation to lift the Dutchwomen to a 2-1 victory over the Brown women's hockey team in ECAC action at Messa Rink on Friday.
Conway fired in her second goal of the season off a feed from junior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) in the 13th minute of the first period, but Kathryn Tomaselli answered just 50 seconds into the next stanza to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bears killed off a pair of penalties in the second period and negated another less than a minute into the third, but could not cash in on two Union infractions, one at 6:50 and another at 12:12.
The two squads fought through over 19 minutes of scoreless hockey in the third until Norton rocketed a high shot and used a screen by Stephanie Thompson to beat Brown senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) on her blocker side.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Bears 17-13 and held a 23-15 faceoff advantage. Moore stopped 15 shots in the setback, while Shenae Lundberg saved 12 of 13 shots for Union.
Brown returns to action tomorrow with an ECAC contest at Rensselaer at 3 p.m.
