Brown Defeated by Quinnipiac, 5-0
HAMDEN, CONNECTICUT – The Brown women's ice hockey team (4-15-1, 3-12-0 ECAC) fell behind Quinnipiac (15-9-2, 9-5-1 ECAC) early in the first period and could never recover, losing 5-0 at the TD Bank Sports Center. Sophomore Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) led the Bears with three shots on goal.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring early when Nicole Connery scored her eighth goal of the season just 3:39 into the game and then added her second of the night two minutes later to extend the Bobcats' lead to 2-0.
Brown was whistled for a roughing penalty following the goal, but the special teams unit blocked three shots en route to killing off the man-advantage. The Bobcats closed out the first period scoring when Kelly Babstock tallied her 22nd goal of the season at 19:33. The Bears fired six shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but Quinnipiac net-minder, Victoria Vigilanti, was up to the task stopping all of Brown's shots.
Quinnipiac scored the only goal of the 2nd period when Babstock found the back of the net 2:23 into the frame. The Bears had a difficult time establishing an offensive rhythm, having to kill two penalties during the middle of the period. The special teams stood tall, however, killing both penalties while allowing only two combined shots on goal and blocking one. The offense was unable to gain ground, as all three shots that found Vigilanti, were turned away.
The Bobcats added a late goal to account for the 5-0 final when Felicia Vieweg scored with under three minutes left in the game. The entire period was played five-on-five, but the Bears were unable to light the lamp with three shots on goal during the frame.
For the game, the Bears' penalty kill finished three for three. The power-play unit, however, never saw the ice, as the Bobcats avoided taking a single penalty. Sophomore Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior Vanessa Welten (Crysler, Ontario) add two shots on goal apiece and five other Brown skaters each had one.
Quinnipiac's Vigilanti finished the evening with 12 saves while Brown senior Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, Ontario) stopped 38 shots. The Bears continue action tomorrow evening when the travel to New Jersey to face the Princeton Tigers in a 4:00pm ECAC and Ivy League contest.
