Bears Downed at Colgate, 4-1

Hamilton, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink, it was Colgate who had their backs against the wall, needing a point to move into sole possession of the final ECAC Hockey playoff spot with just one weekend of conference play left on the schedule. The Raiders went up early with two goals in the first period and added one more in the second. The Bears were able to get one back in the third, but could not overcome the deficit, falling 4-1.

The defenses prevailed for beginning of the first period until a Brown penalty set Colgate up with the first power play of the game. 54 seconds after the infraction, the Raiders held a 1-0 advantage after Brittany Phillips put one in for Colgate.

Brown senior Erica Kromm (Naramata, British Columbia) nearly tied the score up a minute later. After a puck found its way into the Colgate crease, Raider goaltender Lisa Plenderleith attempted to make the cover and assumed she had. However, the puck actually sat in front her, uncovered as Kromm charged the net. The tri-captain fought with a defender as she tried to reach the puck first. Kromm nearly pushed it in, but the attempt went just wide as she crashed into the net.

Late in the initial period, Brown had another great scoring chance as senior tri-captain Jenna Dancewicz (Lake Forest, Ill.) stole the puck and found a streaking Emilie Dolan (Montreal, Quebec). Dolan raced down the ice and actually set up the trailing Dancewicz for the one-timer, but Plenderleith was able to make the save.

The chance set up the Brown offense in the Raider zone and a Colgate penalty appeared to put the Bears in great position. Unfortunately, it was the Raiders who were able to capitalize with a shorthanded goal and a 2-0 lead.

Both defenses tightened up for the first half of the second period as each team traded penalties, but saw their penalty kills prevail. Brown came off a power play opportunity at 9:38 and 10 seconds later the Raiders capitalized again when Phillips scored her second goal of the game.

For the second-straight period, the Bears opened on a power play with at least 40 seconds left. Brown had a couple good looks, but Plenderleith was able to keep the Bears off the scoreboard to start the third.

Brown kept on the attack however, and with 16:36 left to play in the game, the Bears found their way onto the scoreboard. The sophomore line of Erica Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) and Kelly Griffin (Apex, N.C.) combined to set up Alena Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) for her seventh goal of the season and team-leading 13th point.

It did not take Colgate long to respond as Jessi Waters took control near the blue line and fired one on net from just in front of the circle to push the Raider lead back to three.

On a power play with just over seven minutes to play, freshman Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) blasted a slapshot on net that ricocheted off Plenderleith's chest protector and bounced straight up, actually hitting the top of her helmet. The bounce did not go Brown's way however, as it went forward, away from the goal line.

Brown wraps up a five-game road trip this Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. when the team takes on Yale.
