PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Alena Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) exploded in the third period, scoring two goals in under three minutes to power Brown to a 5-2 win over Etobicoke. The exhibition win comes just 18 hours after the Bears downed Yale and Princeton in scrimmages.
Etobicoke got on the board first, putting one in net just 3:02 into the game. The Bears answered eight minutes later when sophomore Kelly Griffin (Apex, N.C.) lit the lamp. Sophomore Laurie Jolin (Lachine, Montreal) and senior Erica Kromm (Naramata, British Columbia) assisted on the goal.
Defense ruled fort the first half of the second period before Etobicoke retook the lead on its second goal of the game. Jolin evened up the score five minutes later putting one past the goalie on the feed from Polenska.
It was all Bears in the final period as the offensive attack kicked into high gear. Freshman Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario) opened the scoring for Brown with a goal just 5:41 into the period on two crisp passes from freshmen Emilie Dolan (Montreal, Quebec) and Vanessa Welten (Crysler, Ontario).
Polenska put her first one in at 9:53 as she set up at the left side of the cage. Jolin and Griffin were able to pass the puck down and find the sophomore forward for the score. Polenska struck again at 12:32 when freshman Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) and Jolin combined to find her for goal number two.
Brown opens its regular-season slate on the road at Boston College on Oct. 24 at 2:30 p.m.
