Toronto Hands Bears 5-4 Exhibition Loss
Providence, R.I. – The Brown women’s hockey team
kicked off the 2009-10 season with an exhibition game against the
Toronto Jr. Aeros on Friday night, dropping an explosive 5-4 game.
Senior Sasha Van Muyen had two points on a goal and an assist, as
the Bears battled throughout but fell late in a game which will not
count towards the final record.
In the first period, the Aeros struck first, scoring an even
strength goal on a quick shot from the right side. Toronto scored
again with just over a minute remaining in the opening frame,
taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Bruno came storming back in
the second though, lighting the lamp only 84 seconds into the
period. The two teams then exchanged goals for the remainder of the
frame, ending the second with the Aeros holding on to a 4-3
advantage.
Both sides had opportunities in the third period, most notably a 5
on 3 chance for Toronto. Brown’s penalty kill unit turned in
an impressive performance though, holding the Aeros off the board.
However, Toronto’s power play came back later in the frame
for an extra man goal to push the lead to 5-3, where it would
remain until Brown senior Nicole Brown added a final tally to make
the score 5-4.
The Bears will be back in action next Friday, when they open the
regular season at home against Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
