Bears Down Sacred Heart, 4-0

(Oct. 11, 2000) -- The Brown field hockey team earned its third shutout of the season on October 11 when the Bears defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers 4-0 on Warner Roof.

Brown only managed to get one goal by Pioneer keeper Ginny Capicchioni (Oradell, NJ) in the first half. Two minutes into the game, Stacey Lafond (North Andover, MA) drew a penalty corner for the Bears, and Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA) put the ball in the back of the cage for her second goal of the season. It was double-assisted by Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) and Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ). Although Brown continued to pressure the Pioneer defense, the team was held scoreless for the remainder of the half.

The Bears came out dominating again in the second half, and this time found the back of the net at 28:45, when Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ) tipped in a ball from Susana Garcia. Ten minutes later, Garcia notched her own unassisted goal, increasing Brown's lead to three. With 9:38 left in the contest, Cara Gardner (Hensall, Ont.) scored the fourth goal for the Bears, knocking a loose ball into the corner of the cage.

Brown had a total of 36 shots in the game and 19 penalty corners, while keeper Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) made two saves for her third shutout of the year.

Sacred Heart took two shots in the game and had no corners, while Capicchioni made an impressive 29 saves in the net.

The field hockey team, improving its record to 6-4, travels to Princeton this weekend to take on the Tigers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
