Columbia Edges out Brown 3-2The Columbia Lions (7-2, 1-2) scored three goals in the second half to defeat the Brown field hockey team (5-4, 0-3) in its third Ivy game of the season.
The first half was controlled by the Bears, who had six penalty corners and both of their goals in the first 35 minutes. Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA) put away her first corner hit of the year at 24:37 to give Brown an early lead. Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) and Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) were both credited with assists on the play. After a lot of midfield action, Brown's Nikki Gamer (Danvers, MA) scored her first collegiate goal with three minutes left in the half, when she tipped in a ball from Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) to give the Bears a two-goal lead.
The Lions came out controlling the second half, putting pressure on the Brown defense and finding their offensive spark. Melissa Macomber (Virginia Beach, VA) put Columbia on the board at 18:09, getting one past Brown's Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) after receiving a pass from Tina Fernandez (Hamilton Square, NJ). At 10:53, Macomber scored again to tie the game, tipping in a ball that was hit by Florencia Battilana (Buenos Aires, Argentina). It took only three more minutes for Columbia to notch the winning goal, as Becky Schatzkin (Norfolk, VA) put the ball away, with the help of an assist by Nikki Campbell (Delran, NJ).
Brown had a total of seven shots in the game and eight corners, with Owens making four saves in the loss.
Columbia took eight total shots and had two corners, with keeper Molly Starsia-Lasagna (Charlottesville, VA) making two saves in the net.
The Bears, who drop to 5-4 overall, 0-3 in the Ivy League, play their next game at home this Wednesday, October 11, when they take on Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. on Warner Roof.
