Brown Field Hockey Falls to Harvard

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team lost their second game of the season today, 1-0, when they fell to Harvard in a close battle on Warner Roof.

In the first half, both teams came out ready to play a physical game. There was a lot of midfield action and great defense on both sides, holding the score at 0-0 until Harvard's Philomena Gambale (Hopedale, MA) notched the winning goal at 14:53, when she slammed in a rebound off of the goalie's pads. Brown could not seem to find the back of the net today, although they had some close chances. With only a minute remaining in the first half, the Bears' Cara Gardner (Hensall, Ontario) had a beautiful tip that was knocked away with a great save by the Harvard goalie, Katie Zacarian (Amherst, MA).

The second half was more of the same, with excellent defense on both sides and goalkeepers that kept the game scoreless for the rest of regulation.

Brown had a total of 11 shots on goal and five penalty corners, as well as a key defensive save by Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA), while Harvard registered 12 shots on goal and 13 corners. Both goalkeepers, Zacarian and Brown's Annie Owens (Louisville, KY), recorded eight saves in the net.

The Bears have now dropped their second Ivy League game of the year, bringing their record to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in the league. Harvard improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.

The Brown field hockey team has its next game this Wednesday, September 27, when they travel to the University of Connecticut to take on the 7th ranked Huskies. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
