Gardner Leads Field Hockey Team to 4-1 Victory over Hofstra

In their season opener against Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York this weekend, the field hockey team emerged victorious after senior forward Cara Gardner (Hensall, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal with 28:05 remaining in the contest.

Junior forward Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ) put the Bears on the scoreboard early into the first half, netting a goal that was assisted by senior tri-captain Susy Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ), who heads the midfield for Brown. Although the rest of the first half was a little shaky for the Bears, who are working on integrating eight freshmen into their program, they managed to hold the Hofstra Pride to only one goal. Hofstra found the back of the net with 7:37 left in the first half, when Tara Sterlacci scored on an assist from Jen Swett.

After an inspirational half-time speech by Coach Norris and some time to recuperate, the Bears came out on fire in the second half and finally demonstrated exactly how they are capable of playing. Gardner broke the 1-1 tie only seven minutes into the second half, when an assist by sophomore forward Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) helped her put the ball past Hofstra's second goalie of the game, Kellie Moritz. Thirteen minutes later, Brown was awarded a penalty stroke when Moritz illegally advanced the ball forward with her glove hand. Junior tri-captain Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) stepped up from the midfield to put the ball away, lifting it past the goalie and into the right side of the net. An insurance goal was added for Brown only minutes later, when Gardner notched her second of the game with 9:39 remaining in the half.

The Bears walked away with a 4-1 win in their season opener, playing everyone on the roster and outshooting their opponent 25-11. Junior Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) registered one save in goal for Brown, and junior defender Katie Austin (Houston, TX) recorded one defensive save in the game.

The field hockey team hosts Providence College in their home opener of the season this Wednesday, September 13 at 4:00 p.m. on Warner Roof.
